Deficient Chin
A deficient chin, also known as a recessed or underdeveloped chin, is a condition in which the chin appears smaller or positioned further back in relation to the rest of the facial structure. The chin plays an important role in defining the lower part of the face and maintaining facial balance. When the chin is underdeveloped, it can affect the harmony between the nose, lips, and jawline, sometimes giving the appearance of a weak facial profile.
This condition may occur due to genetic factors, developmental variations in jaw growth, or certain dental and skeletal abnormalities. A deficient chin can sometimes be associated with problems in bite alignment or jaw positioning. In addition to aesthetic concerns, some individuals may experience functional issues related to the structure of the lower jaw. Treatment for a deficient chin depends on the severity of the condition and the patient’s overall facial structure. In mild cases, orthodontic treatment may help improve the alignment of the teeth and jaw relationship. In more pronounced cases, procedures such as chin augmentation or orthognathic surgery may be recommended to reposition or enhance the chin structure. The need for surgery generally falls into two categories:

- Facial imbalance or asymmetry
- Aesthetic concerns about jawline
